Juice Detox – Do You Juice?

by Annette Jones

We are cleaning up our act at our place and it was decided we’d give our digestive system a bit of a rest this week and start a juice detox.

The decision to start a juice detox came about from reading, listening and watching the benefits that juicing has for our systems.

After my recent visit to hospital last month I was pretty keen as I want to rid my body of toxins from the anesthetic and drugs that were administered.

My partner had watched the scales rising steadily this year, and wasn’t feeling that fit and healthy either ,so that has been his motivation!

The first day of the juice detox for me was fine (I don’t think my body realized what was taking place!), Day two I woke up feeling blah, slight headache and pretty nauseous by mid morning. It was the kind of feeling I have when I don’t eat regularly enough.

By mid afternoon it was worse than blah so I had a vegetable patty and felt much better. I also had a small handful of raw nuts too that evening too.

The third day I was feeling much better and now at the 4th my body has now adjusted to the new food that it’s being served up.

My partner has breezed through the whole thing so far only feeling slightly “funny in the head” a couple of times on the 3rd day.

In case you are wondering what types or fruit and vegetables we are juicing I’ve supplied both the juice recipes and quantities below. We’ve been making two batches then combining the two for a better tasting juice rather than feeling like we are drinking or dirt or grass!

Juice Detox Recipe #1

Adapted slightly from Don Tolman’s Cabala Juice

  • 2.5kgs Carrots
  • 3 Red Apples
  • 3 Green Apples
  • 1 Lemon
  • ½ Beetroot
  • 1 inch Ginger

Juice  Detox Recipe #2

  • 1 bunch Silverbeet (or Chard)
  • 4 Celery Sticks
  • 2 Granny Smith Apples
  • 1 Lemon
  • 1 White Cucumber (Any Color will do)
  • ½ Beetroot
  • ½ inch Ginger

You could easily substitute Kale for the Silverbeet, here, where I live it is fetching $7 at the moment for a very small bunch so we are using Silverbeet instead.

Silverbeet is related to spinach and contains high levels of

  • magnesium
  • calcium
  • vitamin K
  • iron
  • potassium
  • vitamin A
  • folate (folic acid)
  • zinc
  • copper
  • vitamin C
  • dietary fiber
  • vitamin E

Kale is related to broccoli, brussel sprouts and is a member of the Brassica family and is a great source of

  • beta-carotene which converts to Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C is (in abundance)
  • Calcium
  • sulphur-containing phytonutrients (cancer fighting)
  • The phytonutrients also act as antioxidants to disarm free radicals

Carrots are root vegetables and although we used the orange variety there are also white, red-white and purple carrots. Carrots contain more sugar than any other vegetable and are an excellent source of beta carotene, which converts to vitamin A in our bodies. Choose younger carrots if the sugar content bothers (they contain more folate too) you as they are lower in sugar than older carrots

Beetroot also a root vegetable and contains

  • vibrant pigments are potent phytochemicals and
  • antioxidants that help with inflammation and detoxification support.
  •  high in Viamin C
  • manganese, therefore offering great antioxidant support
  • Betalains that help the body make carnitine which is a nutrient that helps the body turn fat into energy
  • Choline which is a B vitamin

Celery and Lemon are both high in Vitamin C and Ginger is great for digestion and breaking down high protein foods as meat and beans lessening it’s effect on the body from uric acid

Drinking the juices are like taking a massive vitamin pill, except it’s all natural and fresh!

Detox Juice

Juice Detox

We are using two juicers; the purest will tell you the second one we use is the ONLY one TO use.

First we process through a centrifugal juicer (it’s quicker!) then pass the pulp back through a cold pressed juicer where even more juice is extracted this way

Cold pressed juicers are much better for the food being processed and for the enzymes and nutrients in the vegetables and fruit too.

We will break our detox juice week tomorrow as it’s my sons Birthday, however, we’ll be back on it for the weekend and at this stage are not sure how long we’ll continue.

I’ll keep you updated on our progress and if you want to check out the Birthday cake you’ll be able to catch it on Instagram.

Do you juice? What do you juice fruit of vegetable? What’s your favourite recipe?
