Coconut Oil Uses and Benefit’s

by Annette Jones

Coconut oil uses vary as it has been round for centuries but it’s only been in the last few years that it has taken front and center stage in the limelight stakes.

On a recent post on the Weight Loss Mother Facebook page I revealed an all natural recipe to get rid of head lice.

(It’s equal parts virgin coconut oil and apple cider vinegar should you ever need it!)

Was was apparent to me was that quite a few people from the 400+ comments made on this single post didn’t know a lot about coconut oil so I’ve put together some facts and figures for you.

11 Coconut Oil Uses and Facts

  • contains medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) which are minimally stored as fat, burning energy more readily, aiding weight loss
  • It can come in a liquid or solid form depending on the temperature
  • the healthiest of cooking oils
  • is a ‘healthy” saturated fat
  • is easy to digest
  • hydrating for skin when applied directly
  • helps beat sugar cravings
  • has a higher smoking temperature than other oils, i.e. olive oil
  • can stabilize an over or under active thyroid
  • contains Lauric acid which helps to build and maintain the body’s immune system, increases HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol) and helps destroy harmful viruses and bacteria
  • makes a fantastic massage oil

I’ve been using coconut oil for a few years now for a couple of main uses. In my cooking and baking, as a moisturizer after shaving my legs, etc, and one of my main coconut oil uses is oil pulling.

Have you heard of oil pulling before? Sound a bit weird? Stick with me! It’s been around since the dawn of time and stems from Aryuvedic Medicine. It’s pretty simple to do and has a stack of benefits.

Here’s what you do…First thing in the morning BEFORE you eat or drink anything and BEFORE you clean your teeth, take about 1 teaspoon of extra virgin organic coconut oil and place it in your mouth.

Swish it around your mouth for 15 minutes (you can multi task smiley wink Coconut Oil Uses and Benefits while swishing) it’s great for

  • bacteria that build up overnight
  • aids detoxing
  • heals gums (gingivitis)
  • helps bad breath
  • plaque build up
  • sensitive teeth and gums
  • weight loss due to detoxification
  • overall heath and well-being

It felt a bit weird at first when I started oil pulling and I’m still not use to the texture when it’s solid as it is now (it’s Winter here) Never swallow the oil after it’s been in your mouth and spit the liquid into the rubbish bin rather than down the sink, as oil isn’t good for our waterways.

I’ve found using coconut oil in baking in particularly good, especially with sweets or desserts as it holds the ingredients together acting as the binding agent. I’ve also used it in stir fry’s and generally in place of olive oil. I love the coconut flavor, however, my partner isn’t as keen and draws the line on the rare occasion that bacon and eggs are on the weekend menu.

Be sure and use cold pressed (no heat) coconut oil as this retains all of the nutritional value. (As with most food) Organic and Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is best used especially if you are using it topically on your body.

Have you tried coconut oil? What’s your favorite way to use it? I’d love to read your comments below or come on over to the Weight Loss Mother Facebook page and leave a comment there, I’d love to meet you!
